SONG LYRICS TO QUOTE IN YOUR WEDDING SPEECH

The great philosopher Ronan Keating once said ‘You say it best when you say nothing at all. Which is a beautiful lyric. However, it’s terrible, terrible advice for a wedding speech.

Your wedding speech is your chance to unload years of love and adoration on your partner in six-minutes.

And what better way to do so than by adding in one of their favourite lyrics?

We’re not saying quote a whole song. And we’re DEFINITELY not saying sing it. But a line or two that perfectly sums up your relationship can be the perfect addition to your speech. And if none come to mind immediately, here’s a few we think will work a treat.

Sweet Musical Speech

Love song lyrics

‘I hope you don’t mind if I put down in words, how wonderful life is now you’re in the world’ (Elton John – Your Song)

Kicking things off with an oldie but a goldie, who sums up love better than Sir Elton? Whether your loved one prefers Elton or Ellie Goulding’s version, this is a surefire winner.

Love song lyrics

‘At last the skies above are blue. My heart was wrapped in clover the night I looked at you’ (Etta James – At Last)

An even older lyric, but nothing says romance like Etta James.

Love song lyrics

‘And when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while. ‘Cause you’re amazing just the way you are’ (Bruno Mars – Just The Way You Are)

We’ve just about resisted the urge to include a lyric from ‘Marry You’, but – for a slightly more contemporary classic – we had to put Bruno in here somewhere.

Love song lyrics

‘Give your all to me, I’ll give my all to you. You’re my end and my beginning, even when I lose I’m winning’ (John Legend – All Of Me)

OK, it’s pretty much illegal not to mention John Legend’s All Of Me in a romantic lyric list. So here it is – the ultimate wedding song.

Love song lyrics

‘I belong with you, you belong with me, you’re my sweetheart’ (The Lumineers – Ho Hey)

One for the slightly more indie romantics on here, this song graced basically every quirky romantic trailer for noughties films and now it could grace your wedding!

Quirky Musical Speech

Love song lyrics

To continue the quirky theme, here are some lyrics from perhaps unexpected places which do the job just as well. Kicking off with masters of romance, Guns N Roses…

‘Now and then when I see her face, she takes me away to that special place and if I’d stare too long I’d probably break down and cry (Guns N’ Roses – Sweet Child O’ Mine)

Weddings don’t have to be huge soppy affairs. What about the couples who want to get married and ride off into the sunset on matching motorbikes? Well, look no further than mr lover lover himself, Axl Rose.

Love song lyrics

Talking of Mr Lover Lover…

‘Girl, you’re my angel, you’re my darling angel. Closer than my peeps you are to me, baby. Shorty, you’re my angel, you’re my darling angel. Girl, you’re my friend when I’m in need, lady’ (Shaggy – Angel)

(To be delivered with more than a little irony).

Love song lyrics

And if rap is your thing, how about?

‘Sweatpants, hair tied, chillin’ with no makeup on. That’s when you’re the prettiest. I hope you don’t take it wrong’ (Drake – Best I Ever Had)

There’s plenty of Drake lyrics we could have chosen, but this is one of our favourites (Note: Whatever you do, do not try to rap in the speech).

Cool Musical Speech

Love song lyrics

Adele or Ed Sheeran may work for some people, but if you want to show you’re still effortlessly cool, here are a few alternatives…

‘Every breath that is in your lungs is a tiny little gift to me’ (The White Stripes – Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground)

Because what says love better than an ex-husband and wife who pretended to be brother and sister?

Love song lyrics

‘Sometimes it seems the going is just too rough and things go wrong no matter what I do. Now and then it seems that life is just too much, but you’ve got the love I need to see me through’ (Candi Staton/Florence and the Machine – You Got The Love)

Funny Musical Speech

Love song lyrics

‘Come with me, my love, to the sea, the sea of love. I wanna tell you how much I love you’ (Cat Power – Sea Of Love)

… Basically any nineties singer-songwriter has a million lyrics that would be perfect for your wedding.

Love song lyrics

Finally, there’s the lyrics that perfectly sum up your silly, funny relationship – warts and all. For example…

‘You’re rarer than a can of dandelion and burdock and those other girls are just post-mix lemonade’ (Arctic Monkeys – Suck It And See)

Alex Turner is a master of the kitchen sink love song. This is another great lyric with bonus points for obscure soft drink references.

Love song lyrics

And finally…

‘I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at your door’ (The Proclaimers – 500 miles)

Although this ONLY works if you do it in a Scottish accent.
